Big changes in the private rental market fuel lively debates at ARLA17

29th Mar 2017

The ARLA conference and exhibition took place at the ExCel centre in London on Tuesday 28th March. Reapit was a proud sponsor of the UK’s largest lettings conference which was a sell-out.

Over 1000 lettings agents, property managers, client accountants and industry suppliers attended the event. Lord William Hague and Political Editor Robert Peston were this year’s keynote speakers. BREXIT was top of their agenda with Article 50 due to be triggered the following day.

At a time when the Government plans to introduce significant changes in the private rented sector, it was unsurprising that debates and question and answer sessions became lively. Life after lettings fees was a particularly contentious subject. It was estimated in research carried out by ARLA that if agents take the full hit of the letting fee ban this could result in over 16,000 job losses, and that landlords are expected to act negatively if agency fees are increased to recoup the losses.

During the afternoon session, an announcement was made by Baroness Hayter about membership to Client Money Protection schemes being made compulsory for all lettings agencies – something that ARLA Propertymark has been campaigning for over the last 2 years.

On the exhibition floor, Reapit occupied stand F21. Our colourful stand was designed with a ‘Big Numbers’ theme in mind and transported delegates back to school. An Apple Watch was up for grabs in our ‘Take the Test’ competition. Delegates were invited to answer 5 challenging multiple choice questions that were based on client accounts. Though there were no penny perfect scores, a winner was crowned…

*Drum roll*

Samantha Spindler from Graham Butt was top of the class - congratulations!
